Am I responsible to damages caused by my son driving without a license?

My son is 16 and does not have a driver’s license. He does not because he is not reliable. His friend gave him the keys to her uninsured car and allowed him to drive several times. The car randomly died and it had to be put in neutral and restarted, this happened while my son was driving and being that he is not an experienced driver he jerked the wheel which locked, he ran into a fence and did damage to the fence. The owner of the fence now expects me to pay for the fence. I feel as if she allowed him to drive she should be responsible for the fence. The fence owner told me it was easier to sue me than her. Am I responsible?
